How to automatically check for messages?

How do I get my response mailer to automatically check for messages?
Where I am not at my computer hitting the send/receive button.

The Responder will automatically check for new emails and whether follow-up/broadcast messages need to be sent.

You can specify how frequent this should be done by changing the settings in the email account.
Edit the e-mail account and select the Advanced tab.
Make sure that the 'Check for new messages' box is checked.
Enter the number of minutes or hours that must elapse before another check is done.
